I have prepared a slide deck to help Yr 10 students who are finding approaching an unseen poem tricky. They write well, but find it hard to get a way into the poem in the first place. Two poems are used here: DH Lawrence: Piano and Heaney: Digging.
I have tried to enable them to access a poem using either the SCASI or SLIME acronym. Both can enable students to make a start by breaking down the possible points of access. Although in exams they will need to be guided by the bullet points in the question, so as not to stray too far from the mark scheme, my hope is that using one of these techniques will develop their confidence right at the start of the process.
