I recently published a post in which I listed a Spotify playlist to link to my American Literature teaching ideas.
Here I link to a playlist for the American Song Book – these songs written largely between 1910 and 1940 seem to epitomise American music of that era – a time when ‘the Jazz Age’ is a term we bandy about without perhaps fully understanding the significance of an authentic American voice emerging. In Classical music Copland was creating his spacious American sound and writing on ‘frontier’ themes, but much else was still aping the European tradition, much as Literature from the ‘old’ East seems to struggle to portray the ‘new’ America with such a wider racial and cultural influence.
Anyway – enjoy these….
